About intermodal

We combine rail line-haul with road drayage to move freight long distances, coordinating the whole trip — pickup, rail, and final delivery — as one move. Rail costs less and burns less fuel than over-the-road on long lanes; the trade-off is a day or two of added transit, planned around your delivery date.

That trade-off is the whole decision, and it is stated before you commit rather than after. On a lane where the delivery date has no slack, we will say that road is the better answer.

Where rail does win, the coordination is what makes it work: the drayage legs at either end have to line up with the ramp schedule, or the saving disappears into storage charges at a terminal.

What intermodal covers

  • Rail line-haul over Class 1 railroads
  • Road drayage at both ends
  • One coordinated move end to end
  • Ramp booking and scheduling
  • Chassis sourced for the road legs
  • Rail versus road compared before booking

Where rail beats road

The long corridors on this map are where rail line-haul pays; the short dense ones are usually quicker and no dearer by road.
