Decks that stretch for long freight

Extendable flatbeds and step-decks carry beams, pipe, and freight that overhangs a standard deck

The deck stretches to the piece

A telescoping deck supports long freight along its length rather than leaving it overhanging off the back.

Supported, not cantilevered

Beams, girders, and pipe sit on deck for their full run, which is what keeps a long piece from flexing in transit.

Permitted to the length

Over-length loads carry permits and escorts set to how far the deck is drawn out, arranged before the move.

About extendable transport

An extendable trailer telescopes: the deck draws out from its own frame so it can be set to the length of the piece it is carrying. Extendable flatbeds and step-decks are both in use, so the class is chosen by the height of the freight as well as its length.

Length is the problem these solve. Bridge girders, structural beams, pipe sections, wind and crane components, conveyor runs, and long crated assemblies all exceed a standard 48 or 53-foot deck. Carrying them on a short deck means cantilevering the overhang off the back, which loads the piece in ways it was not built for; stretching the deck supports it along its run instead.

Over-length freight is permitted and escorted to the length it actually travels at, which is set before dispatch rather than discovered at a weigh scale. Where the piece is heavy rather than long, added axle lines are the answer, and where it is tall, a double-drop well carries it lower.

Where an extendable stops, one of these starts.

What moves on an extendable

Where extendables run

Availability follows the fleet — densest near the Montréal base, extended by contracted carriers.

Québec and Ontario

Owned equipment, and the bridge and fabrication work along the corridor.

Western Canada

Contracted stretch decks for pipeline and energy components.

Atlantic Canada

Project cargo and fabricated sections out of the Maritime ports.

United States

Cross-border lanes with over-length permits per state.
